Neurodeck: Psychological Deckbuilder

Neurodeck

Player fighting agoraphobia, represented by crowd menacingly looking at you. They are about to inflict sorrow, depleting our stamina.

Neurodeck is taking a deckbuilder game concept into the realm of self help. What’s a deckbuilder? It is a type of game where, through repeated encounters with problems (enemies) the player responds with abilities represented by cards, and player’s deck of cards changes and grows after each encounter – at least partially directed by player.

Player encounters various phobias, fighting them using real world “techniques” like daydreaming, human contact, comfort food, exercise etc. In between encounters with phobias, character is revealed thru reminiscence, and developed and directed by choosing what to focus on, remember or forget.

It is moderately fun as a game but could instill some habits and a mindset that persistence and varying arsenal of methods could help you with the phobia (or life in general). It is not very difficult, sessions take about an hour, user interface is solid and music is stimulating, so it is accessible to everybody. As a minus point, fights against phobias are a little too abstract and similar and are more about card tactics than actually using inner resources (but I haven’t played extensively).
